MALAPPURAM

The word Malappuram literally means a land atop hills. Bounded by the Nilgiri hills on the east, the Arabian Sea on the west, Trissur and Palakkad districts on the south, Malappuram is nurtured by 3 great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha. Although Malappuram lays behind the states other districts in literacy and education, paradoxically the districts has contributed in no small measure to Kerala’s cultural traditions. It was a famous center for Hindu-Vedic learning an Islamic philosophy.

The temples and mosques of this district are well known for their spectacular festivals. Along with historic monuments and diverse natural attractions, a range of cultural and ritual art forms add to its value as a destination worth visiting.

Places of Attraction

Thirunavaya: Situated on the banks of Bharathapuzha, Thirunavaya is a place of historical and religious significance. This was one of the venues of Mamamkam festival, a grand assembly of the rulers of Kerala, held once in every 12 years. It is believed to have been founded by Cheraman Perumal, it was last performed in 1766. Today, Thirunavaya is the venue for the annual Sarvodaya Mela.

The Jama-at Mosque: The Jama-at mosque is an important pilgrim center of the Muslims of Kerala. The annual festival at the mosque is celebrated in April for 4 days.

Kottakkal: The small town is famous for Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, one of the pioneer institutions of Ayurveda, the traditional system of health and medicine in Kerala. It is among the best run ayurvedic centers in the state for it also run an ayurvedic research center, a nursing home and a hospital.

Adyanpara: Located in the Kurumbalangode village of Nilambur Taluk, Adyampara is famous for its waterfalls and the splendour of its lush jungles. It is situated 15 kms away from Nilambur.

Kodikuthimala: The perennial springs and the green mountains form an alluring landscape. View tower and other facilities have been developed at this spot.

Padinharekara Beach: At the end of the Tipu Sultan road near Ponnani, the beach offers a breathtaking view of the confluence of the Bharathapuzha, the Tirur Puzha and the Arabian Sea.

Vallikunnu Beach: A beach resort set in the middle of a coconut grove is the main attraction here. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is just a short distance away.
