MALAPPURAM
The
word Malappuram literally means a land atop hills. Bounded by
the Nilgiri hills on the east, the Arabian Sea on the west, Trissur
and Palakkad districts on the south, Malappuram is nurtured by
3 great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi
and the Bharathapuzha. Although Malappuram lays behind the states
other districts in literacy and education, paradoxically the districts
has contributed in no small measure to Kerala’s cultural
traditions. It was a famous center for Hindu-Vedic learning an
Islamic philosophy.
The
temples and mosques of this district are well known for their
spectacular festivals. Along with historic monuments and diverse
natural attractions, a range of cultural and ritual art forms
add to its value as a destination worth visiting.
