Silchar is a small town situated on the southern bank of Barak River and it offers a welcome break during the long journeys between Shillong and Mizoram or Tripura. Silchar is a commercial hub and is also the headquarters of Cachar district. Being a serene place, it earned the name ‘Island of Peace’ from late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Silchar is also the gateway to Mizoram and parts of Manipur.
