The cluster of textile mills in and around Coimbatore has earned for it the name as the ‘Textile Capital of South’ or the ‘Manchester of South India’. Situated on the banks of river Noyyal, it is one of the busiest industrial cities in Tamilnadu. It is the third largest city in the state and serves as an entry and exit point to the neighbouring states of Kerala and Karnataka. It can be made as the base for visiting Nilgiris, Palani and many temples and places of tourist interest in this region. Coimbatore is also the centre for many engineering and electronic industries and foundries. It is called as the ‘Detroit of South India’.
Around are coffee and tea plantations, besides major irrigational projects and Agricultural and Forest Colleges. It is also one of the best equipped cities in bus transport of Tamilnadu. The G,.D. Naidu Industrial Exhibition is a tribute to a great technocrat of the city.
